China 1858

In the Jenyns room from August 11th - September 12th 2008, admission free.

To coincide with the Beijing Olympics, BRLSI presents an exhibition of artefacts and early photographs that reveal a perspective of China 150 years ago.

Mandarin silk hat trimmed with beaver






Porcelain figure of a scholar standing with open book: early 20th century. His hat is typical of a mandarin but he wears no pigtail so is dated to after the Manchu Empire fell.

Toy papier mâché dog and cat with nodding head and tail
The dog is a mythical 'lion dog'. Cats bring good luck (especially if they catch rats!).


 




Foreground: Ridge tiles from the forbidden city.
They represent a sea-horse and sea-lion,
and are probably 19th century.
Background: Hat box.
