A new date has been set for Prof Greg Hurst’s lecture Tales of The Red Queen - why parasites can be particularly important drivers of evolution. Originally scheduled for 12th June, it had to be postponed due to sudden family commitments (the early arrival of Prof Hurst’s new daughter), and will now take place at 7.30 on Friday September 11th instead.
The Red Queen hypothesis is named after the character in Lewis Carroll’s Through The Looking Glass, who described a race in which contestants needed to run just to stand still. It explains the evolutionary ‘arms races’ in which species which don’t evolve are outpaced in the race for survival by those that do. Prof Hurst will describe the battles between hosts and parasites which drive evolution forward in both groups, aiding them in their struggle to survive in the wider environment.
