I believe that in a society surrounded by and heavily dependent on modern Science and rapidly developing Technology, it is desirable to foster a good appreciation and understanding of science.
The general aim will be to present items of real science - explained conceptually - across a wide range of disciplines, both to extend our knowledge and understanding, and also to appreciate their interest and importance.
A further important aim will be to try to do what we can to resist the recent decline of the standing of science in the public imagination.
NEXT EVENT :
Friday 23rd May 2008 at 7.30pm
Colour Alchemy - by standing Newton on his head
Speaker: Professor Jonathan Knight, University of Bath.
Recent research at Bath has resulted in very effective nonlinear fibres which have air holes running down their length. They enable one literally to change the colour of light as it travels: a visually spectacular and physically intriguing phenomenon with multiple applications.
