THE CHANGING HISTORY OF THE CRIMEAN WAR

HUGH SMALL
Writer

Monday, 28 April 2008 at 7.30pm

Hugh Small published a critically acclaimed biography of Florence Nightingale in 1998 and a history of the Crimean War - in which Florence Nightingale rose to fame - in 2007. He examines how the Crimean War (1854-56) was perceived differently by Victorian writers and by 20th century historians and explains the differences in interpretation. He suggests that the War may be due for another reappraisal in the light of recent history of Eastern Europe
