Usually Anglo-German Naval relations are understood in the context of `the causes of the First World War`, if not also of `the decline of Britain`. This paper will suggest that the true story has only a little to do with either. German ambitions only seriously collided with British seapower about 1908, and the challenge collapsed in 1912. The failure of German Naval expansion may have had something to do with the origins of the war, but certainly not its success.
