BATH & ITS INTELLECTUALS

CEDRIC CHIVERS
(1853-1929):

LOCAL BUSINESS MAN AND MAYOR OF BATH-HIS IMPACT ON BATH

Dr Evelyn Lewis & Ivor Stone

Wednesday 06 February 2008 at 7.30pm

Cedric Chivers, member of the family of Bath Bookbinders, expanded the business following his forays into Paris and International literary circles.  His role in Bath as Mayor on seven occasions, Philanthropist, visionary and innovative bookbinder accounted for the great influence that he was both in the City and in Literary associations.  Cedric Chivers' was one of the leading employers in Bath between the Wars.   Influenced by his Trade Unionist activities in London, 1891, he was an employer ahead of his time.  Such was his popularity, Bath stopped as his funeral processed through the City.  Archival material and Chivers' books, including Chivers' own 'Vellucent'  technique first exhibited and patented in 1898, will be on display.  The present role Chivers' legacy plays in the restoration of the BRLSI Historic Library today will be outlined.
