Extracting the Bite from Malaria
New approaches to bio-pharmaceuticals extraction

A large number of active bio-pharmaceutical compounds, including the precursor to antimalarial drugs – artemisinin –
are extracted using flammable toxic solvents, such as hexane.
In this lecture alternative approaches to extraction, using supercritical phases, ionic liquids  and hydrofluorocarbons
will be discussed from the point of view of their efficiency, economics and greenness.
