Goodridge the Greek:
The Birth of the Picturesque in Bath

Amy Frost, Curator,
Beckford's Tower and Museum

Wednesday 02 April 2008 at 7.30pm

The natural landscape of Bath provided the ideal backdrop for the development of the Picturesque.   As Neo-classical architecture moved from the strict ancient sources of the Greek Revival to the inseparable combination of architecture and landscape that defined the Picturesque, the fashion for building urban villas in the hills surrounding Bath was initiated.  This lecture explores the theory behind the Picturesque and illustrate how it defined the expansion of the city during the first half of the 19th century through the architecture of Henry Edmund Goodridge.
